I just installed Microsoft Sharepoint Services v3.0 on my second IIS server. The server is running Windows 2003 Server R2 Standard and is setup just as a member server. Im going to be setting up some sharepoint sites and my Intranet/Extranet on here but i need to get it to cooperate with Active Directory.

Im trying to get it to create Distribution Lists automatically so that if you send an email to that distribution email address it goes to all the members of that sharepoint site and i have the email part setup right and its working correctly with Exchange 2003 which is on a different server. Do i have to install Active Directory on the server or what do i need to change?

During your installation of Sharepoint I believe you had a choice of running it off of Active Directory. I don't recall it having to be on the same box. I think you can point to a server where your AD is sitting.

i have no idea why this isnt working or maybe im missing something here... Ive uninstalled sharepoint services, and when i go to reinstall it i cant find a way to specify an Active Directory server. How do i do this? I dont have a seperate SQL Server so i'll end up using the WDSE. Can i even specify an AD server since im not using a seperate SQL server?

Have you checked that the account you are using for all the administrative things has enough permissions in your AD? There is no special setting when you install SahrePoint tp "which" AD to use. If it is a member server of your AD domain then just make sure that you have an admin (service) account that has enough rights in your AD and in SharePoint.

So basically I do not think this is a sharepoint problem, it is a permissions problem in your AD (and on your OU level).

Cheers,
Thomas

so when i install it would it be wise to just create a specific admin user just for sharepoint within AD and then find the setting for the service and tell it to use that user?

Exactly. When you are at the SharePoint central administration pages (after installation) you will have to assign an account to several administrative services in sharepoint, so it is wise to create specific accounts for those.

Thomas

ok... i reinstalled sharepoint and for the sharepoint application pool i created a new user with admin rights and placed that user in the OU for Sharepoint i created. I put in that users details in the application pool screen for Sharepoint, but when that user is the service account nobody can login to it, you have to reset it back to the network service as the service account.

What am i doing wrong here to be able to create distribution groups and all that within sharepoint? Is it going to come down to installing sharepoint on an AD server, or am i not doing something right cause im new to this.

All my servers run Windows Server 2003 Standard R2. The IIS Server i have sharepoint running on is a Member server and its sharepoint services v3.0

no matter how i setup the service account and setting it as the application pool service account it will not let me create distribution groups.

Also... is it possible to create users in Sharepoint that can only login to sharepoint. Most of our employees are remote users and dont have an AD account and i just want them to login to their sharepoint site only and i dont want them to have an account on AD. Is this possible using the built in SQL Desktop Engine?

FYI - By default all users in a domain (think it's authenticated users) can READ your AD. Just need special rights to write data to it.

ok, but the account i set the sharepoint user as is a domain admin so that account should have been able to write to the AD. What am i doing wrong?
