Hi all,

I've just bought a new server which is destined to be a Sharepoint Server. Seeing as the bosses didn't baulk at the price, I also bought SQL 2005 for a bit of future proofing should the use of the app take off!

I'm trying to plan the best way to get it installed. I'm not really fussed whether it's Sharepoint Services 2 or 3 as we'll probably only be using the basic functionality, to begin with anyway. What I'm more interested in is getting it to work with SQL 2005. I hunted high and low and, so far, haven't been able to find any specific for SQL 2005, it all seems to be 2003. Seeing as I'm an SQl novice, I'm looking for an idiots guide.

Anyone got any info as to which version of WSS I should use, should I install WSS or SQL first?

Basically, how do I do it?

Thanks a lot

Rossco

You will need to install SQL first since you need to connect up to the database when you do the installation of WSS. Try looking it up at the Microsoft site. I haven't successfully gotten MOSS 2007 to work but WSS v3 wasn't too bad to install. I tried to get fancy and screwed it all up.

Hi Max,

thanks for the reply.

If I was to install SQL, bog standard just accept the defaults and then create a Sharepoint database, would that be the way to go?

I've found about the remotesql=true option for installing WSS2 but can't see anything similiar for WSS3, am I just being dumb?

I thought it would be dead simple, install SQL, the install of WSS would detect it and just do it all for me. Guess I was being a bit niave!

I've got it working.

I installed SQL and then followed the instructions for installing WSS2 from the WSS2 Administrators Guide, which got it up and running using the SQL database. I then simply upgraded it to WSS3 and all is hunky dorey.

I'm sure that there must be a way to install WSS3 directly using SQL but I couldn't find it.
