I may need some help configuring SSL with Sharepoint Services 3.0.

Presently I have Sharepoint installed and configured on a webserver sitting in a network segment away from the internal network. It is part of our domain and users can access it internally with no problems. Recently I picked up an SSL certificate for the site, and planned pushing it externally. After installing the certificate and trying the address from my machine I get the following: after authenticating with the the address bar will redirect to if I change the http to https it will work as well. External access however is a different story entirely. From home I try and am prompted with a basic login box, after the first authentication, the dialog box will change to servername.domainname.com/username. I tried logging in as username@domainname.com and received a ‘page cannot be displayed’

I followed the lazy admin article ( with no success, even issued the stsadm.exe commands with both reporting as successful.

Does anyone have a suggestion I should persue at this point? I am ready to tell the users that sharepoint cannot be configured for external access.

I had the same issue. Did you extend the existing WSS application to another IIS website using the SSL port you want to use?
In Sharepoint Central Administration: "Application management/create or extend web application/Extend an Existing Web Application".
