SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Can't Search

I can not search either local or mapped drives with SP Portal Server 2003. I get a "protocol handler" error. it looks like the indexes were built and everything but no search. I am using one server for everything, SQL database, etc. I have done previous installs when the search worked.
Any ideas???
