I am very new to sharepoint portal and services and have installed on a test server. I have a couple of questions - and any information you can provide will be great. I am overwhelmed with all the Microsoft information - so if you know of a good starting place, please let me know! Or, if you have a quick overview of key terms that would help too.

Thanks!

Angela

Can sharepoint portal be installed on the same server as our public web site without any problems? I want to secure some content while other content should not be restricted.

How does content management work with sharepoint? Do I need to install sharepoint portal completely or just a connector to use with content management?

How does security and login work? Does sharepoint have own security? Is security integrated?

Hello Angela!

In a previous post I tried to answer and explain a little about how sharepoint can be setup in a public environment.
You can read the post by going to
When you say, you want to secure some content, what exactly do you mean? You can ofcourse restrict access to certain parts of a SharePoint Portal and SharePoint site by setting user-rights, but making the SharePoint application available on a public server still involves risks, even to the content you have restricted access to.

When it comes to content management I am not really sure what you actually mean. Microsoft actually have to different sharepoint products;
Windows SharePoint Services (which is free of use with win20003 server) and SharePoint Portal Server (which is built ontop of Windows SharePoint Services).

When you install SharePoint Portal server you basically get all the functionality that comes with it. Could you please explain a bit more what you are trying to achieve.

When it comes to security sharepont uses NTLM accounts (windows, Active Directory accounts). SharePoint has by default a number of site groups (user-rights groups)which you can use to grant access to certain parts of a portal or a site.

For documentation about sharepoint there sure are a lot of documents. I would recommend going through the SharePoint Portal Administration guide
I also bought a copy of SharePoint Products and Technologies ResourceKit which is a very useful book to use as a reference.

Regards,
Thomas
