Hi,

We're in the very early stages of planning a Sharepoint Portal Server project. We intend to split the web front-end, index server and database server into three separate servers. We already have the SQL Server anyway, but I was wondering if we need a separate license for each component of the sharepoint portal server, ie. 1 license for the web front end, 1 license for the index server, etc.etc.
Does it work like that?

Cheers

Hello,

Yes, you will need one license per server where you install SharePoint Portal Server (even though you are using one for web, one for index etc.)

Cheers,
Thomas

so do you actually install sharepoint portal server on a machine that's an index server? ...hmm... interesting. I'll have to check it out.

Hello,

Yes you need to install SharePoint Portal Server on the machine that will be the index server. It is SharePoint Portal Server that will handle (create) the index.

I am running a medium server farm with 2 front end webservers/search and 1 index/job server and for that I need 3 SharePoint Portal Server licenses.

Cheers,
Thomas
