My company is preparing to setup an intranet using Sharepoint. What is recommended for hardware? We are deciding if we can put it on a server we already have or if we need a new server.

Thanks for your help.

For SPS you will need a server running Win 2003. Min requirements are: Intel PIII compatible processor, 512MB of RAM and 550MB of free hd space.

However this is of course all relevant on how many users you have, whether or not you are going to store your documents on it, let users have personal sites or create sites.

The specs above are the minimum for Sharepoint Portal Server - I would suggest at least double that much RAM for it not to run slow and probably also a dual processor machine.

I should have been more clear on users. There are about 275 users that will access SPS and we will also use it for document sharing.
