Hi all,

I have a couple of questions regarding the interaction that SharePoint has with MS Exchange server.

I am looking to deploy SharePoint 2003 in a site that will not have MS Exchange 2003. There is no connection to the outside world at all. This is possible to change in the future, as with the need to deploy Exchange. From my investigations, I have the rough idea that this is possibly a bad idea deploying Exchange after. I am looking for confirmation of this.

My questions are:
1. Does SharePoint rely on Exchange at all?
2. If SharePoint is installed in an environment without Exchange, can Exchange be installed after?
3. Does SharePoint modify the Active Directory much?

Some basic but interesting questions that will add the information on this forum I hope.

I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks in advanced

1. Does SharePoint rely on Exchange at all? No.

2. If SharePoint is installed in an environment without Exchange, can Exchange be installed after? Yes.

3. Does SharePoint modify the Active Directory much?
SHarePoint does not heavy schema changes as Exchange or SMS does. SharePoint can be configured to read and write information from and to Active Directory. However, if you have MIIS, I would suggest to use that to populate information in AD instead of using SharePoint to populate user profile information.

Thanks for you prompt feedback globalstrata,

Can Sharepoint and Exchange be on the same box?

I have on different boxes, but I believe they can be the same box however Sharepoint does cause Issues (big issues) with Outlook Web Access due to the IIS lockdown it runs when installed if they are on the same server. I think there are ways around it but in short if you can have seperate servers do.

:)
