In a Sharepoint document library, when I click on a file to open it, it automatically opens in that document's program. For example, a Word document will open in Word.

When a coworker does the same thing, the document opens in Internet Explorer. This is problematic. What governs this process? How do I make his machine work like mine?

install office and make sure it is the standard program to open word docs.

Open windows explorer, go to tools, folder options, file types, scroll down until you find the .doc extension (you can do the same for xls etc afterwards) click on .doc, then click the advanced button and untick Browse in same window.

Thats it. I haven't rolled Sharepoint out to my users so I haven't checked yet, but you might be able to set this with Group Policy in Active Directory as well.
