Sharepoint Designer Navigation colour changes

I am desperatly trying to change the colour of the navigation bar at the top of my sharepoint site. I cannot seem to change it though.

I have managed to change the place holder colour but am struggling to change the button colour. It remians white when I want it green. Any ideas how I change this please. Its very annoying!!!

I think it has to do with the TopNav css and master pages. Here is a link that may help -
