Hi,

I have installed sharepoint with the front end on one server and a SQL Server 2005 back end for the data.

My current database size is about 3.6GB but I don't have that much data uploaded.

When I run this command: stsadm -o enumsites -url it states the content database is 354MB, which is about right.

I have tried shrinking the database but no luck?

Does anyone know if the database is supposed to be this big? Because of overhead or something else?

Database size is a function of planned capacity. You should have configured this at installation after having gone through the processes recommended at

I would say that 3.6GB is a tad small for any serious Sharepoint installation. MS says especially that you shouldn't leave it configured to the default size.

There are plenty of useful links in the URL above; check 'em out.

Good Luck!

Time's fun when you're having flies.

Thanks for the info, I started to transfer data over and when I checked how much space I was using in SharePoint it stated 345MB but when I look at the database it states over 3.6GB.

Reading the articles by Microsoft it says the content total multiply it by 1.3 for any overhead.

It just does not make sense?

I found out why my database size was so big. Even though I thought I deleted everything out of the End User Recycle Bins on the site I never looked in the Deleted from End User Recycle Bin after I deleted that and shrunk the content database it is a normal size now.

A simple oversight, thanks for your help.
