Sharepoint Custom Index

I have a need to include a custom index (external db source) in my Sharepoint search results. This external system is a proprietary custom search index. Is it possible to have Sharepoint search that index in addition to the native Sharepoint search index?

Also, I need this to work with both MOSS and WSS.

Any help is appreciated to point me in the right path!
