Yes, there are many potential causes of this Authentication error from firewalls, permissions, and various other settings in networks and IIS, but the cause of the one I just spent working on for hours is Google's Web Accelerator, which had placed a proxy.pac file in the user's LAN settings in IE. Turning it off or uninstalling gets rid of the authentication error with sharepoint. There is more info on Google's Web Accerlerator here;
