I am wondering how limited a Sharepoint site I would have if I did it without SQL?

MS says you can do it if you are not going to have more than 10 team sites. This is sufficient for me.

What are the limitations?

I have SQL running on seperate server, can I attach to it?
Is it easy to do?

I have tight budget restrictions so I cant buy another copy of SQL for a while.

Any insight would be appreciated.

You can use your existing SQL Server instance as a DB host for the SPS databases. You just need to install Sharepoint in a server farm configuration, and point the portal at the SQL instance on the network.

Check the docs for details. I'm a bit behind the curve; we're not going to MOSS for a couple of months.
