SharePoint 2003 WSS site search

I have a user reporting that WSS search does not return results when searching for documents he knows are in the site. I verified the behavior and found a strange behavior. If a filename has dashes in it, SharePoint WSS sill not find it.

Example:
M111-8 (engineering drawing).pdf

If I search for M111-8 or engineer or engineering or drawing... WSS search finds the file.

If I search for M111 or anything less than M111-8, WSS search does not find it.

Has anyone seen this behavior before and is this a known issue or somehting that can be fixed?
