I publish a public website but also now need to get an intranet up. Is there a way to change the port during instllation so it won't shut down my existing website on port 80?

If you choose a farm installation, you get much more control. When you do a farm installation, it will create the Central Admin site (and you do get to choose what port for the Central Admin site). Unlike the simple install, the farm installation doesn't automatically create a default content site. You must create it as a seperate step and at that time you can choose your port. Hope that helps.

Your question probably also depends on if you're using a proxy server at all. In looking around the web for other things over the past week I've seen some interesting concepts when using a proxy server.

You might do a search for "AAM sharepoint". AAM is Alternate Access Mapping.

Sorry I don't have a more definitive answer, but hopefully this points you in the right direction.
