Our Internet DSL connection recently went down. Using a Netopia router, it was setup to allow telnet in. I wasn't able to telnet or ping our WAN IP from the outside...I did a bunch of other testing. The service provider said they can get to their modem, but can't see the mac address of our nic. I could get from the router to the gateway ip, but no further. Anyway, they say it's a router problem.

THEN TODAY, I go to try to telnet in and I get SOMEONE ELSE'S ROUTER. I verified I had the correct WAN IP and am awaiting a response from the provider as to what's up. Anyone know why this might happen?

Most ISPs use DHCP to give IP addresses to residentail customers. If nothing ever goes wrong you keep renewing the lease and keep getting the same IP,

Once you quit renewing your lease, the IP is re-used.

(note if your ISP sold you a Static IP address, I am full of it)

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

When the connection went down, was it due to an electrical storm?, if so, you may have a damaged modem.

3 weeks ago, I had the same thing happen to me, even though I have the dsl and phone lines connected to surge protectors, it wasn't enough, the phone line got struck by lightning halfway across town, and all the phones across 3 city blocks was taken out, including mine.

After repairs had finished, I had phone service but no dsl connection, I contacted my provider, and they said there was no problems at their end, all the lights on the modem showed steady green, I even did a modem software recovery, but still nothing, I couldn't telnet into the modem from inside or outside the lan, so I tried another modem and it worked perfect.

My suggestion, is to try another modem.
