I have a sub report that has shared variables that are used in the main report. Many of the sections of the main report are suppressed just to show totals. If I suppress the section the sub-report is in the shared variable from the sub do not work in the main report. If I don't suppress the section the sub report is in the shared variable works, but there is too much blank space causing too many pages. I also tried hiding instead of suppressing, but that didn't help either. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Right click on the subreport->format subreport->subreport tab->check "suppress blank subreport". Then suppress all sections within the subreport and remove the borders. Then in the main report, go into the section expert->section containing the sub->check "suppress blank section". This will make the sub and the section it is in disappear from the display.
What you CANNOT do and still pass the shared variable is suppress the subreport object itself or suppress or hide the section it is in.

lbass, I followed your instructions and was able to not suppress the section the sub report was in and am not losing the value of the shared variable from the sub report. There are no longer any more large blank areas or blank pages in the report. Thanks for your resolution!
