Is there a way to trick OE into keeping e-mail messages on one computer, and accessing them from several? Thinking along the lines of running OE from network shared drive or?
The small company concerned has only one e-mail address, and 5 employees who need to access it. If they access mail from one machine, it is no longer available to any other machine. I know we can put in a mail server or use outlook, but, frankly, outlook express is enough for them to handle. They have been using an old version of Netscape Communicator - which works OK, but the new versions do not. Prefer to use MS.

From my experience with OE, you cannot Share the mail files. One option, not a great one, but I have seen it work, you set up the machines to "Leave a copy of messages on server." It is located on the Advanced Tab for an e-mail server property. That way each machine will download all messages. Once a day/week (depending on your e-mail load) you uncheck that on one of the machines and do a check mail. This will delete all the messages from the server.

It is not pretty, it is not perfect, but I have used it in such a situation where a small company has one e-mail and just a few machines.

Sure hope this helps. [idea] Tom Backus

The "leave it on the server" is not an option, as one drawing file can virtually fill the ISP mailbox. Neeed to be able to clear the mailbox at least every half hour. This is a land survey office.

That puts a whole new spin on it. I will have to think on this one for awhile. I will get back to you later in the week. I love a challenge. Tom Backus

I'm thinking of putting a "mercury" mail server (same company as "pegasus" mail) on the machine with the internet connection and having it check the mail on a regular basis, then have the OE go to the "mercury" server for e-mail - with the OE leaving the messages on the "mercury". Does this sound feasible?
May even go to Pegasus Mail and leave both OE and Netscape behind.

Having never used Mercury or Pegasus, I can't speak directly to this, but taking a quick look at the web site, this looks like it should work. In fact, this looks like a good option, they are both freeware, so the price is right, and it looks like it is made just for this option.

Good luck,
