Hi,

Do the shared file/s really have to be open on the server to be found by the remote computer? Is there any way around that?

Another related question: I see that Filemaker does not recommend filesharing outside of a LAN. Is that very much a no-no? Does everyone pretty much use the instant web sharing feature?

Thanks!

Shelia,

There are a couple ways to share FM files. One is to use the Filemaker Server Product ($1,500 +) and the other is to use the regular Filemaker Pro client software. If you have the Filemaker Server product, it can share files with up to 250 other Filemaker Pro users. If you are using regular Filemaker Pro, it can share with a total of five Filemaker users.

In either case, the file(s) must be open in order for others to access the file(s).

The Filemaker company strongly advises against sharing FM files using the conventional file sharing method that you find on the Windows and Mac operating systems. Other users should only connect to the FM host system using the native FM sharing method:

File > Open Remote
