I had this shared folder called vc-backup on a pc called D12353. So the path is:

\\D12353\vc-backup

A live server was able to get redirect .wav files into this folder and it was up and running for several weeks. However our server team did an upgrade on the network and changed our domain name so now the pc is on Active Directory 2003 instead of Windows 2000 server. The shared folder no longer gets the backup files.

I have spoke to the server team and they say it is because you cant have a shared folder on a pc in active directory (only admin shares - is that correct??). They said i have to change the path on the server to this

\\D12353\c$\vc-backup and then it will work again. I have now did this but it still doesnt update the shared folder.

Anyone any ideas about shared folders?

What they've told you is incorrect. The way a share works between 2000 and 2003 didn't change. Make sure the folder itself is still set to be shared with the proper permissions.

Kevin,

Not quite clear on the upgrade. If it was a straight upgrade from 2000 AD to 2003 AD there should be no difference.Did they upgrade from a Workgroup to a Domain? If that's the case then you'll have to reset the share and ntfs permissions.

Are you able to map the drive to this shared folder? If not what error messages are you getting. Could it be a rights issue since the domain was changed?

By default, W2k gave everybody full permissions on a newly created share. By default, W2K3 only gives read access. Have your server team check the share permissions (not the NTFS permissions).

Ask your server team "If you can't share a folder on W2K3, how do I get to my Home folder?"
