Shared calendar reminders

I created a public calendar for two users. Every time I try to set reminders for any appointments I get the error message, "The reminder for "[appointment name]" will not appear because the item is not in your Calendar or Tasks folder." How can I set this up to have the appointment reminders sent to both users? Any help at all would be great. Thanks in advance.
