Have not posted much for a while - been busy but I have a problem where 2 users need to access an mde file, but I have had different results as to who can access it, firstly when user(1) has the file open, when user(2) tries to access the file the file doesn't open, but when user(2) opens the file first user(1) can get in ok. I then issued a new program and now neither user can access the file if the other user has it open. (the file sits on user(1) pc)

Has anyone any ideas please.

I think the users are opening the database exclusively.

Check their default open mode under Tools > Options > Advanced.

They will both also require read/write permissions the directory in which the database resides.

Ed Metcalfe.

Please do not feed the trolls.....

In addition to the read/write permissions, they will need create and delete permissions on the directory.

Thanks for suggestions, have tried all options and all seems to be ok with what has been suggested, it seems wierd that the situation changed when i replaced the program with a new update (latest programmed version) so this leans towards it being an issue with the file rather than with the access system setting - would you maybe agree ? but a bit stumped if this the case

It might make a difference in permissions if you have either "copied and pasted" or "cut and pasted" your Access file. Copying should use the security/permissions of the TARGET folder. Cut and Paste will use the security/permissions of the SOURCE folder.

One item i have not mentioned that may have implications, both PC's have XP Home, security tab is not readily available - is this where the issue is ??

Can both users create and delete files in the folder containing the MDB/MDE?

Yes - created files with both users in user(1) folder and deleted them

Do you see an ldb file in the directory when one and/or the other user opens the file?

yes, user(1) opens file ldb exists can see from both pc's, user(2) opens file can see ldb from both pc's, pc(1) can open file when pc(2) has file open, but pc(2) cant open file when pc(1) has file open

It sounds like pc(1) is opening exclusively.

the default mode in Tools > Options > Advanced is shared, is there any other areas i can check that is it being opened exclusively.

How are they opening the file? Are they opening Access and then File->Open? There is an open mode somewhere on the file dialog box.

This has given a result in that when I open access and then do File->Open, then I ensure that the open mode on the file dialog box is OPEN, then all is ok. But how do I force this option to be active via the shortcut that links to shared file ?

I would check the properties of the link and maybe search Help on command line options.
