Here is my problem. I have an existing Windows 2000 server acting as a file server, the data share is on it’s own drive (D:) pulling the user accounts from a NT PDC.

I want to migrate the file server to a new box, running Windows 2003, still pulling the user accounts from the NT PDC on the same domain

I should mention that the shares were not set up properly (some have share level permissions and some have security permissions, But anyway….

This is what I tried;

-Installed Win 2003 on the new server
-I took a ghost image of the Data drive (D:) on the existing file server
-Restored the image to the new server’s D: drive
-Imported the Registry Key to migrate shares in both places(Microsoft article ID # 125996)
-rebooted the server

Now when I go into the properties of the shares, I’m only getting the user’s SIDs and not resolving the user names.

This to me indicates that the Windows 2003 is not pulling the proper data from the user manager on the NT PDC (where the user accounts are). Is this correct?

Is there a different way to do this in Win2k3 or do I have to recreate all the users, or maybe tweaking the Reg Key?

Anyone ever do this to their file server?

At this point I’m thinking that the only way to properly convert this new server is to blow away the Win2k3 install and install Win2000, then do the OS upgrade and keep my fingers crossed that it will now pull the proper user ACLs.

Any input would be much appreciated

You don't mention having made the server a member of the domain.

Do you have DNS and WINS setup on the new box? ANy plans to do away with the old NT system, you should try to upgrade the domain to at least Win2K.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
