I have a desktop and I just want to be able to share the interent betweent the two. I have a cable internet connection via external ethernet. My desktop has 2 nic cards and my labtop has one. I'm wanting to do this without having the purchase anything extra for the time being. All I want to do is keep my labtop updates and get on the internet every so often without having to unplug my cable from on to the other every time.

I know you stated that you do not want to purchase anything extra right now. My question is why not? A router would be an easy and more elegant solution to your issue and give you some added security from hackers through the use of a private network behind NAT. Nowadays you can pick up a router for cheap. I see plenty of used ones on Ebay or Amazon for well under $20. Heck for not much more cash you can pick up a router with 802.11b wireless capabilities and a USB 802.11b netword adaptor and free your laptop of the cat5 cable altogether.

since my labtop already has a 802.11g wireless adapter I guess the smart thing to do would be to just get a .11g router....is this all I would need?

If your laptop already has 802.11g built-in then yes, all you would need is a 11g router. Keep in mind that if you are interested in saving money you can still purchase a 11b router which tends to be cheaper than a 11g router. 11g is compatible with 11b (albeit at 11b speeds). But if I were in your position I would definitely spring for the 11g router because of the added speeds and security features.
