Hello,
Assuming that i have a USB HD connected to a PC via hub. Now i connect another PC to the hub, is it possible to access the external HD from the new connected PC? Does this situation also depends on Windows platform?

Any advise/comments are greatly appreciated.Thanks :)

If the external HD is an asset (drive letter assigned) of the first PC, it is available to the 2nd PC via network.

Give the wrong symptoms, get the wrong solutions.

System Configuration:

USB external HD --> Hub --> first PC
|----> second PC

Under the above circumstances, will the second PC able to access the external harddisk if the first PC is shut down?

I don't think that the standard USB controllers will work in this configuration. Hubs are made to extend the number of devices for a single controller, not to connect controllers between them. There shall be no A-A cables, that would let you connect a PC at the output of a hub.

Thanks,felixc.
What if we don't use a hub? Can we use something else so that to replace the hub but still satisfy my needs (2nd PC can access the hard disk even the 1st PC is shut down).

I've seen external hard drives designed to operate on both USB and ethernet. I don't know if this would solve your "Computer #1" off problem, but it's a starting point.
