I'm new to this whole mac/pc networking thing but I'm having some success. I have a powerbook running 10.2.6 and a desktop running Win2k pro.

1. On the powerbook I duplicated the ethernet port in the network settings. On one I allow it to get an IP from my ISP's DHCP server (cable modem) and on the other I set it to manual and use 192.168.0.4 as an IP. This way the power book can get on the net and at least gets to the login screen for connecting to the PC. My problem is I cant figure out which username/password to use. Which user from which comp?

2. If I manually set my PC's IP to 192.168.0.3 I can connect and loggin to the powerbook but of course cant get an internet connection.

How do get the PC to find/detect/utilize the macs connection and how to I get the mac to loggin to the PC?

Thanks ahead of time.

Okay, let me see if I get this straight:

you have two physical ethernet ports on your powerbook. one connects to your cable modem, the other to your lan. On your lan you have a pc running win2k pro. You are trying to configure your mac to act as a gateway (with NAT). Is all this right?

Assuming it is have you set up the mac to share it's internet connection? I believe that's in system preferences->network or sharing.

What you log in as on your mac does not affect it's server capabilities.

You need to set your pc to use the mac as gateway. Where you set its IP address, there should also be a setting for this. You also need to set your pc to use a dns server. Your mac should show this where it displays what IP address you have received from your cable company.

I'm not sure what you mean by getting the mac to log-in to the pc? I suppose you should look into VNC though if you want to remotely control your PC. do a google search for it and you'll find all the info you need.

actually no, I dont know how, but OS X can duplicate just one physical ethernet port using software. So I get two complete sets of ethernet options. On one I allow for a DHCP connect, on the other I have a set internal IP/subnet. I'm basically trying to figure out the default gateway setting for the PC so I can allow it to obtain automatically yet force it to obtain from the mac.
