What is it? Attempted to do a system backup and got "shadow error." I then rebooted the system via EM and watched the boot sequence via Procomm. Here's what it showed:

NCGL 2005 (cjdavola)
Kernel 2.4.22-ncgl-10.12.1.0 on an i686 (ttyS0)

Restarting system.

The hard drive never came back after this.

I have another site that gave me a shadow error and it not fully patched, and I'm now afraid to reboot that system fearing the HD will be lost.

I am having the same problem. I have a BCM 200 running Element Manager 4.0.2.21d. It was updated in February 2009. This sytem is not being backed up so I decide to start. The backup seems to attempt to collect data for a short time and them gives me a dialog box that simply says "Shadow Error" and the backup fails. I have tried this to a network drive (perferred) as well as directly to the BCM with no luck. We have two other BCMs on our network and I have no problems backing them up to a network drive.

The answer I got from someone on the Nortel forum was similiar to your experience. They said they had to replace the hard drive. I have not rebooted my BCM but I am now a little gun shy to try it.

Does anyone have any other experience with this issue?

I replaced the HD today and all ok.

Richglaser:

Don't reboot unless u have a spare HD. Have u tried opening a case w/ Nortel to see if they can get into the system via the back door? In my case it was too late as after I attempted a reboot the HD died.

Dasheen - Thanks for the warnings and concern. Your observations seem consistent with other forums I have read. I will certainly be opening a case with Nortel.
