>DISCLAIMER: i am an Irix/SGI noob.<

I would like to use a PC monitor with an SGI octane. The octane has a 13w3 connector, and the monitor has a standard 15pin vga connector.

I have an adaptor that is *supposed* to work for this conversion. however i do not get anything on the monitor. (nada, the monitor doesnt see anything. or doesnt handle what it is seeing) the monitor is a viewsonic a75s. it does handle sync-on-green.

My question is two part: first should i be getting anything output wise? green picture or otherwise.
would an old Sun monitor .... (GDM-1962B) work with the octane ? (both have the 13w3 connectors.)

I have a sinking suspision that i have to change something in the configs in order for the PC monitor to work, But i dont have an SGI monitor. Plus i only have the Sun monitor at work.

I also ordered such an adaptor but it also did not work.
However I have my Iiyama working. Found out that a few wires in the adaptor are not there, maybe because the adaptor is for a Sun. So I first checked the Iiyama site to see which signals I needed. Next I looked on for the signals coming out of the SGI. In my case it's an Indigo2 but I assume that it's the same for the Octane. Next you should do is try to find out the wiring for your pc monitor. I bought a separate 13w3 conn and an extension cable for a standard pc monitor. I cut one conn off and solderd the 13w3 to the cable. You have to look for one of the vesa compliant lines and hook it up to one of the monitor type pins on the 13w3 conn.
