SGI IRIX and ADIC FastStor Lib writing TAR files

The customer has an ADIC FastStor (1 DLT8000 and 7 slots) unit installed on an SGI system running the IRIX OS. There is no backup software. The customer is writing TAR files.
According to the ADIC manual when a write gets to end of tape the ADIC unit should unload the tape, place in open slot, load another tape and continue processing the write. This does not happen; when it gets to end of tape the drive rewinds the tape to BOT and stops.
Question: Is there a way to make the automatic ADIC feature work without using scripting or backup software?
