Can someone please give me an overview of SFTP for Linux?

There is a perfectly acceptable description of it on the sftp/ man page. Is there anything specific you want to know?

Hi Annihilannic,

I need to find out if PGP encryption is unneccesary because of its SSH connection. Can I still submit my files through FTP using my SFTP server?

That's entirely up to you, if you want to be ultra-secure then go ahead, but it would be quite difficult for anyone to capture and decode files transferred using sftp.

You can't use a plain FTP client to connect to an SFTP server, they are completely different protocols, they just have a similar command language.
