I just purchased a couple of third party GLC-SX-MMD transceivers. When I put them in, I get the following error:

%SFF8472-5-THRESHOLD_VIOLATION: Gi1/0/50: Tx power low alarm; Operating value: -40.0 dBm, Threshold value: -13.5 dBm.

When I do a SH INT TRANS I get the following:

[pre] Optical Optical
Temperature Voltage Tx Power Rx Power
Port (Celsius) (Volts) (dBm) (dBm)
--------- ----------- ------- -------- --------
Gi1/0/50 16.6 3.34 -4.3 -40.0

Optical Optical
Temperature Voltage Tx Power Rx Power
Port (Celsius) (Volts) (dBm) (dBm)
--------- ----------- ------- -------- --------
Gi0/49 17.5 3.34 -40.0 -4.7[/pre]

Do the -40 dBm levels suggest defective/incompatible 3rd party transceivers or am I doing something wrong? This is the first time I've used an SFP port. Everything appears to be keyed, so I can't be physically plugging it in backwards (without causing some obvious damage).

I tried to use the 'service unsupported-transceiver' and 'no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid' but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Thanks for any suggestions!

You will get that error if the module is not receiving light from the other end. 1) Is the other end plugged in? 2) Do the tx and rx fibers need to be flipped in the connector?
