I have an Octel 250 on Aria 2.2 that has a defective drive and it only has two drives. I have recently received another 250 that has 4 drives and a tape unit. I would like to "Forklift" the new system into service. I have instuctions/ doc's explaining the procedures for performing drive replacement and back ups in order to tranfer data from the old to the new but The procedures ask to enter a service bit after entering a control command @ the boot prompt. I do not know where to find this service bit. Due to our tight budget, I can't at this time contract out this swap. Is there a way for me to do this without getting a 3rd party involved? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just my opinion but if you have never done a swap like this you do not want to do it your self. The service bit can only be turned on by an authorized partner or Avaya.

You may want to call the Octel 800 service number and they will turn on the eng or service bit at N/C

If you have a miss step you will have a big paper weight and not a voicemail system.

You also need to make sure that the new system has the capacity to restore the old system. It may have 4 drived but you need to check the software features and number of hours and users to make sure.

Thanks for the advice. I have the new system on line and have verified the SW features and hours and all exceedes my current system's capacity. But.....I'm going to follow your suggestion and wait for some dollars to free up. Thanks!

The cost to do this would not be that much. Just the time to do the converstion and some travel.

If you can get away from the forklift idea, then one can replace the defective drive in the old machine using a drive from the new machine. Use the drive replacement utility in menu 20.

I have nothing in menu 20 that mentions disk replacement.
1-phrase table
2-misc utilities
3-port testing
4-online cdr
5-lan
6-scsi utilities

I have accessed all menu choices as well as those for disk management and system maint. Am I missing something?

You have to have the service bit turned on or access it from the modem port.

I think I'll take your initial advice and sub this out to an authorized rep! Thanks again.
