Hey there,
I am pretty new to linux (redhat)), but have got on ok so far getting my external modem to connect to my ISP and configuring the PPP connection with RH ppp (i.e. not using Kppp, even though i am in KDE).
But I have had problems with my NIC. I don't seem to be able to do anything towards setting it up with out my modem settings going out the window.
All i want to do is have the NIC as a connection to my local network (at home so for now just a pingable connection would do, eventually my linux machine will be the lolcal DNS server and firewall).
Generally my modem 'forgets' the DNS settings for my ISP and also stops any non root user from making a connection. This is just when i set my ethernet card to a static IP.
1) First Question - can i set my modem completely separate of my ethernet card (like in windows)?
2) When installing things and configuring them (i.e. like my PPP connections) as root is there an easy way of allowing all users to use them? (or if this isn't happening is this my problem.)?
3) I mainly wanted to try linux so that i could configure everything with .conf (editable txt) files (like i have previously with apache), rather than lots of menus and pop-ups as KDE wants me to...so where are these files or how do i find them?
4) I know these are not all that specific kind of questions but I have a fairly inadequate linux reference book....is there a 'bible' type book for linux like the camel book is to perl? (as i think that might help me alot).
Hopefully if any linux expert can help with no. 4 then I can find my own way through the first three..
Many thanks
JEz
