I am not sure if I am using the correct terminology or exactly what I need to accomplish my goal. I have an office that has over 30 workstations and one server. I would like to setup something that if the server goes down then another server would be able to take over immediately and the office would not be down at all. The office runs dental applications such as Dexis and Dentrix.

What type of hardware and/or software do I need to accomplish this? Do I need enterprise edition server os?

I read about replication, clustering and failover but not sure which one I need.

Thanks

That's too broad a question to answer easily.

In theory, you could setup two virtual hosts, configure guest servers on one to provide the services you need, and configure failover to the other host should something go wrong. This could be guick migration, like in Hyper V, or V-Motion, like in VMWare.

But it would take some design effort to get everything right.
