SETUP Problem 3D Studio Max 1

After the setup process the system(Celeron 466 MHz with 96 MB RAM ) was shut down and restarted.
The 3D studio max software was launched for the first time.
At one of the dialogue boxes which sought details on "Render Initialization" the option "HEIDI" was checked by me.
There after I was presented with an error message which is reproduced below
" 3D Studio Max Fatal Error
Interactive 3D renderer initialization failed .
Please check your device settings using the
-H command line option"
Clcking on the "ok" button closed the message box and exited the application.
All attempts to launch the application again met the same fate.
Uninstalling and reinstalling has not helped.
Please help me tide over problem.

run this "C:\3DSMAX3\3dsmax.exe -h" and when the window pops up change it too the default
