I have Exchange 5.5 w/ SP4 and am trying to set up internet mail service and when clicking "next>" on the screen that asks for the name of the exchange server I get the error message: "Internet Mail Service require the DNS domain name to be configured on <server name>". I installed the "Microsoft DNS Server" from the Services tab in the 'network' section of the control panel and rebooted, but when I double click the service I get the error message: "Cannot configure the software component".

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Hi,

Go to the properties of Network Neighborhood, then to Protocols-->TCP/IP-->DNS, in the Host name type your server name and in the domain type your domain name. Then ADD the DNS server address below, close that window it'll ask for restart, after restarting you can add the Internet Mail Service.

That worked! Thanks. But now the problem is that I can't send mail, only receive it. My configuration is Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT4 SP6.1 with Outlook 2000 SR1 running on a seperate workstation on the LAN. The following Ports are forwarded to the Exchange Server's IP address on the LAN at the router: 80, 25 and 110

Here is the error message that is returned:

"LULU" is the server name and "torp23.com" is the web site name.

I ran some ping tests and nothing seemed to be wrong. Do you know of any reason Exchange won't send email?

There's loads of stuff that could be going on!

Are you relying? Exchange 5.5 relays by default and thus your are probably on loads of 'black-hole' lists, and thus can't send mail. In the properties of the IMC, there'a double-negative you need check:- it's like "None of these following nets can relay:- 0.0.0.0".. Check the Microsoft website for real details!

Also, check your Ip stack is OK. Send an "echo" out to find if you are cool or not!

Sorry. Typo error. When I said "relying", I meant "relaying".

Thanks for the information. I have to admit that the issues you are citing are new to me and I would have to research them. It doesn't seem like it should be such a monumental job to get email to send when the system successfully receives. I expected that there would be a connection setting on my end to instruct 5.5 to make a mail connection through the ISP that is sending my emails through the domain name. Or, maybe that Exchange 5.5 looks for the servers on the internet all by itself and distributes the emails through a P2P connection or something. I am not familiar with the stratagy 5.5 uses to send mail, but will have to look further for an answer to my question. Please let me know if there is anything else you can tell me or point me to for information on this topic (I will scour technet and the MSKB for starters).

Thanks for your help!

I found a 'round-about' fix for this issue, but it would be better if I could do this through Exchange.

I went into the account settings on the client (Outlook) and changed the outbound mailbox setting to point to the ISP's mail server instead of my Exchange server on my LAN. Now it will send the email properly, but it's too bad I couldn't set up Exchange to do this instead. I tried to enter the ISP's mail server into the 'Delivery options' section on the 'Connections' tab of the IMS properties but that didn't allow emails to be sent. Anyone have any ideas on how to configure Exchange to send the mail so the clients can be linked directly to Exchange?
