I have been charged with connecting crystal reports 10 to a sql server.

So far I have the domain name and server name* but not the db instance name*.
I am used to Oracle where these* are usually different values. Is this true with SQL server?

Do I need a SQL Server database Log on or will my network id work if set up properly? I am on an XP machine connecting to NT.

If I should use a network ID, what are the general steps the admin should take to give this id permission to access the database?

I can see a SQL server driver in the MS ODBC System DSN list; do I need any other software installed to connect?

In the MS ODBC > System DSN>Add>SQL Server dialogue box, I am assuming the following: Name and description are up to me to choose.
The SQL server drop down offers some server names, but not the one I am looking for. Can I type this in and if so, what is the syntax? (domain\server...?)

Thanks for any and all info!

You do not need any other software. WinXP has all the ODBC drivers required.

You can set the connection to 'use NT authentication' so that you do not need a SQL server username and password. Just ensure that each user that might use the ODBC connection has sifficient rights on the SQL Server database. This can be done by adding the user to the list of database users, on the server, and giving rights. Sometimes it is easier to create one username and password for the ODBC connection that all can use.

You should see all servers available within your domain. If not check your network and/or Server setup.
