Hi

as of yesterday my computer suddenly wouldn't load Windows 98 citing that files needed for the loading of Windows had been deleted from the system.ini folder as the reason herefor. This I havent done and thus cant explain why this is. Everytime I start the computer it lists about 20 such files and then says i need to restart the computer which I do with the same result.

My next attempt was to reload Windows 98 using the startup disk - all goes fine until the actual installation process is about to begin when I receive an error message SU0409 saying that an anti-virus program is running and this needs to be disabled. This is not the case!! Furthermore it says I should delete the line starting the antivirus program in the autoexec.bat file. How do I access this file and which line should I delete??

What else can I try?? Please help me as the computer has many very important files I need for my studies and without it i am lost!

Thanks

Hans

To start, when you have booted to a command prompt, at c:\>, type this: edit autoexec.bat
Look for a line that c:\program files\your virus scanner program\whatever.exe. Go to the beginning of that line and type: rem and put a space between it and the line of code. The go to file and save it, exit, and reboot your computer and try it again. That rem will disable that line and skip it when processing your autoexec.bat.

I do recommend that you make a backup of your autoexec.bat before you start it...just to play it safe. at the command prompt, type this: copy autoexec.bat autoexec.bak

Hope that helps,
V

Hi V

Thanks for this, i tried it as you suggested but as I suspected there was no anti-virus line. Maybe the problem can be solved in another way?

This is what I have tried since my last mail:

The message that arises when starting windows normally says that the system.ini file refers to a file which has been deleted or no longer exists. The name of this file is WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\<various different names>.VXB (this ending may be wrong). When one presses enter another file appears which is the same as above just with a different name in the < >. In total there are about 48 such files after which the computer shuts down.

Using the start-up disk I have extracted the VMM32.VXB files to the windows\system folder, however also with no change in the situation. Is there a way to replace the system.ini file so that it doesnt always look for this file??

I really need my computer for my studies and am lost without it so would really appreciate your help!

Thanks

Hans
