setup my own mail server on Ubuntu Linux using Postfix. The mail server is working correctly because I tested it using mxlookup. Now I am trying to setup an email client to you use with the mail server to send emails. I am using Evolution. However, I believe that the settings which I entered are incorrect. Can someone walk me through the setup of Evolution so that it can work with the mail server? Where does the mail server get the username database from? Is it using the usernames which are defined on the Linux server itself?

Thank You

I think postfix uses Procmail mailboxes as sendmail.

You just need to create a user account that reads from Unix mailbox, and not from Pop3, set the server to localhost, pass your correct unix login credentials and it should work.

Life is what happens when you are making other plans.

QatQat - your answer sounds simple enough - but in reality I can't seem to get it to work. Evolution requires you to specify a mailbox location, which also sounds simple enough - /var/mail/username or /home/username/mail , right? Wrong - it won't let you select a directory - it asks for a directory but won't let you continue setup unless you choose a file. I set up a file, just to test it, and when you click Send/Receive it tells you it isn't a directory!! Argh - I feel like throwing my coffee cup at the screen because there is no help online for this.

I know it is a strange setup to have mail delivered locally and to pick it up locally with Evolution, but I have it working sucessfully with SuSe & Kmail. I have the proxy alerts sent to this address and then use Kmail to filter the mails so that the data is more administerable. I just can't seem to get this to work on Ubuntu (Gnome) & Evolution. I like Gnome for every other reason and don't really want to go back to KDE, but I am really frustrated.

Any ideas anyone? (P.S. It could be something simple - I am a Microsoft person originally and have only very recently ported myself to Linux!!)

Well, I do not use Evolution but it sound strange.

Your kind of setup is not that rare; on my home mail server I have thunderbird to get my mail and it connects direclty to procmail's mailbox which is in /var/spool/mail/username.

/var/mail/username is only a symlink to the above one.

Probably you should try to use the real mailbox instead of the symlink; I doubt it will make any difference but it won't do any harm.

I will look for info about evolution's setup and get back to you.

If I could have sex each time I reboot my server, I would definitely prefer Windoz over Linux!

Looking at this post again I realised that I have been answering to two different users; what is happening?
