I have a laptop where Win 2000 freezes at the white loading screen. I've tried safe mode, vga mode, etc.. and nothing works. I was going to boot off the cd and try a repair but the computer locks up trying to load the setup. It loads all the drivers but freezes when it gets to the "starting windows 2000" screen right before it would give the option to install or repair. What's the best course of action?

instead of repair try reinstall with a new name for windows....backup all files....format and start from scratch...

goodluck

(btw u might wanna wait cuase other people probably have better ideas)

I think you need to check your hardware for errors as a it freezes on you when you are booting from your cd which means you wouldn't be able to clean install it either as its not even letting you come that far in the cd boot process.

I would download a memtest program and let it run through a couple of passes.
is a good and free test to use.

If your memory checks out ok the next easy test is to scan your hard drive for failures. I would download the tool from the makers of your drive if you aren't sure of what make your hard drive is Seagates and Hitachi's should be able to do a generic test on your drive.

If both your mem and hdd checks out ok you might have a dodgy windows setup cd, it might be worth trying a diffrent one. Potentially it could also be your cpu or motherboard that is faulty but I don't know of a good free tool that will let you check this.

I had a pc on my desk earlier this week that kept freezing on me fresh install worked so far and then froze, when looking closely at the motherboard I saw that the capacitors near the cpu had started leaking...this problem has been well documented and could possibly be your problem as well. Not sure how prone the laptop motherboards are to the leaking capacitor problem like normal desktop boards.
