Hello everyone,

I really would like to get a Linux Firewall installed for my network but don’t know how and where to start. I don’t know which Linux OS I should get and what type of firewall software I should go for. Currently I am running single PowerEdge Server that I am hosting emails, web pages, and some local applications. At this moment I’m using a Linksys router/firewall.

I appreciate if anyone can give me some advise.

Thanks,

Mike

Jay's Firewall works on many Distributions.

Neatly menu driven. Default assumptions are that firewall/linux box has two (2) NICs.

You didn't mention if you need to put some smarts into the linux box to keep a PPPoE ADSL connection up. I'm betting that your Linksys router is doing that. You'd put the firewall behind the linksys, and your network behind the firewall.

Smarts into linux box"?
I never heard about that and I think it's because I never used linux! Can you please tell me more about it?

I'm using static ADSL so I don't think I am currently using PPPoE! Am I right?

Let me tell you more about what I do with my server so you tell what I need.

It's a Windows 2003 SBS and I am currently running these applicatoins: SQL 2000, Exchange 2003, ColdFusion, DNS, DHCP, IIS, AntiVirus Server.

I have ADSL (2.5 Down/700 Up) going through my Linksys Firewall/Router and then from Linksys it's going to first nic of my server and from the second nic it's going to my local switch.

I really appriciate if you can give me some feedback.

Thanks,

Mike

The relevant issue is whether your linksys router is the responsible "party" to login you into the ADSL connection and keep it running. If it is, then you're OK and don't need more than the firewall software. PPPoE is used even for static circuits since you need to login to bring up the circuit (in most circumstnces).
