Setting VTP Domain name on Live Switch

Hi,

I'm trying to get VLANS up and running on a Cisco 3560 for the first time (both me and the switch). It's live, I can't lab it and I risk bringing the company to its knees (yes, I know).

I've configured a VLAN (102) but I get this...

CISCO#show ip interface brief
Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Protocol
Vlan1 10.238.0.254 YES NVRAM up up
Vlan102 10.1.238.1 YES manual up down

The protocol is "down". I'm guessing that this is because no VTP domain name has been set yet.

What happens if I just set it? Will it have any side effects on the existing untagged traffic? If it breaks it I'll bring the company down.

thanks!

If you don't have any active ports in vlan 102 it will show up/down . It has to have at least 1 active port to come up or be part of an active trunk.

Thanks - I thought that the ports were configured for trunking by default but when I configured them specifically, the VLAN came up.

I'm connecting a VMWare host to a Fortigate firewall. Oddly the firewall can ping the host but not vice versa. Any ideas?

I should add that I've assigned an IP address to the VLAN interface on the switch and I can ping that so I don't think that the problem is with the host.

As Burts said most firewalls by default will block ping so you won't get a response.
