Hi,

My friend has enlisted my help recently so that he can set up a wireless network. While I've had experience with cabled Ethernet networks, I'm new to wireless networking and would appreciate your help.

His computer has 1 network card. It is linked with a crossover cable to his Playstation 2 (he uses this link for online play on the console). He has recently purchased a laptop and wishes to connect this wirelessly so that he can use it to browse the Internet around the house.

I am wondering what the best way to connect these devices is. I was thinking along the lines of using a switch to connect the computer to the Playstation and some kind of wireless broadcasting unit?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Jack

Linksys WRT54G wireless router with 4 port switch built in. Stay away from speedbooster series...they are really buggy and lots of negative feedback on the net.

Thanks for the reply. I assume I simply use it as a normal switch and use a wireless PCMCIA card for the laptop?

It gives you four ports for wired devices and also has wireless radio for others. This is an ethernet model router so as to hook into an adsl or cable modem. You can get other models that elimindate the ISP modem such as a adsl or cable router. It would all depend on his internet connection as to which device to purchase.

His DSL modem is linked using a USB connection, so plugging it directly into the router is impossible. Can you give an example of a model that would eliminate the ISP modem?

Thanks

He should check with his ISP as to which DSL modems are compatible with his system. He can buy one and stop renting from the ISP. Then all is good.
