Hi Guys,

we are on the process of installing a windows 2003 server r2 x64.

We got the hardware fully compatible and all the drivers at hand. We have the info for a domain, lets say company.com.jp,
we have our website being developed and hosted outside. we have the emails hosted also by another provider.

Any tips, procedures in doing the installation would be very helpful, microsoft site hasnt been to helpful with regards to step by step procedure, i dont wanna mess the setup.

This server will be the first, this will also serve as the Domain controller, dns and ads.

Main concern is, i want this server to manage all logins. Really appreciate all the help.

thanks!

Nothing special about the OS...install it and patch it.

To become a DC, simply run DCPROMO at a command prompt and follow the onscreen prompts:
DNS:
DHCP:

BTW, all those links came from a simple Google search that you could have done in ten seconds each.

Thanks guys... will try to follow the procedures given.

Hi again guys... was able to follow the instructions on setting up the OS, DNS, ADS...

and by checking the images.. its showing that I got everything right... except that... i am now trying to join the domain, and the workstation is giving out an error " a domain controller for the domain xxxx could not be contacted ensure that the name is typed correctly"

any ideas on how to proceed?

DNS DNS DNS DNS. Assuming your new server is your domain controller and dns server your workstation must have it's preferred dns server set to the IP address of your domain controller.

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

Hi Paul..

yup.. did that already to the client.. still not being able to join the domain.

assuming, that the server was configured properly as based on the procedures from this then the problem could be from somewhere else right?

how about IP of the server? i used the generic IP 192.168.1.2 as the fixed IP of the server, rather than let the router assign the IP.

really appreciate the time and effort guys.

If you do ipconfig /all on the server does everything show up correctly?
If you add the DNS address on the client ['static'] does it find the server?

got it....

freakin windows firewall activated on its own blocking the traffic coming in...

everything is ok now...

by the way... any suggestion on a good Server antivirus before i put this server online...

We use McAfee EPo & Groupsheild, Webroot Spysweeper along with Mail Marshal, and exchange anti-spam and WSUS to keep OSes patched, may seem like overkill but this is a National policy. The IT person below us uses Norton and seems to have a lot of issues with viruses but then again thats all he uses. and it even blocked his mail for a week before they released a patch.
