setting up vsftpd and setting up users

hi,
i am trying to set up vsftpd and set users to log in to /var/

http://www/html

directory. i have set up the vsftpd and when i set the ownership of the directory "html" to be the same group as that of "ftp users" then i can upload the files and do other operations---but when i change the ownership to be "apache" the webserver group then i cannot do the upload and other openations??? i have been playing with this for past several days but cant get it to work?
i am using "fedora core 3", with vsftp - version 2.0.1
any clue? or documentation regarding this.
one of the first search in google helps u set up the vsftpd but it doesnt help set up users whose default directory is other than the one created in /home directory.

Why are you changing the group ownership of the directory? If you need both your FTP users group and your web server to access the directory, why not just make your Apache user a member of the ftp user group?

hmm, let me try that. but is there a way to assign "apache" as a member of the "ftp user" group --like a command line or something. The way i have been doing is editing the /etc/group file and assigning the users there.

i guess it was a firewall problem---for some reason as soon as i turn the firewalls off i was able to ftp stuff in ; also after editing the iptables to compromise for ip address i was able to ftp stuff in with the firewalls turned on..but how do i get the ip to accept the ftp connection from ipaddresses that are not entered in iptables script?
