I am trying to setup some vlans on network. There are 2 2924XL switches running older IOS 11.2(8). The commands to setup vlans do not work. Is this because the older IOS verison. Do I need to go to maybe 12.0 or greater. ANy ideas would be great. thanks in advance.

Is your switch a Standard edition? Do a sh version and check it.

Multiple VLANs is restricted to Enterprise edition:

Multiple virtual LANs (using the Enterprise Edition Software IOS Release 11.2(8)SA5 or later)

You must use the Enterprise Edition Software to configure multiple VLANs. If you use the standard edition software, you can only configure one VLAN.

That's a key line of the output to check.

Ok SO now I know I have Enterprise edition. I am supposed to be able to create Vlans. None of the commands to create them work. Is this due to the older IOS version? SHould I get a more recent one like 12.0 or something. I only currently have one vlan which I used to set the IP on the switch.

I am sorry but I do not believe you are running the Enterprise version.
I selected this line from your sh version output:

Running default software

This mean that you are running Standard version.

Line pointed out by bierhunter was from my own output.
