Setting Up User Equivalence

I have 2 Openserver systems as shown below

Hostname Version

Central2 running 5.0.7
Central3 running 5.0.4

I am trying to establish user equivalence with the root user between the above systems. I have made the what I think to be the appropriate additions to the following files:-

/.rhosts
/etc/hosts.equiv
/etc/hosts

The root user has the same password on both hosts, however when I try to run the command "rcmd central3 date" from central2 I get the following message:-

"Permission denied."

I have managed OK in the past to set up user equivalence. Is there something obvious I am not doing? Is there an issue with the 2 slightly different versions of Openserver?

Many Thanks

Many thanks for the link. I will work my way thru this and let you know the outcome.

You also may keep in mind that with all the system hacks, the newer version may just not allow a root user to do this anymore.

Just closing up the possibility of someone messing with your system. There may be some additional steps to do, and you may find it on the SCO TA lists on the OS 5.07.

I have finally got this working by working thru the linnk supplied on the on this thread earlier :-

Although there a number of things to check the area that made a difference for me was checking how the remote host is seen by the host that it is trying to connect to.

e.g. Host1 is trying to connect to Host2

1) On Host1 telnet into Host2
2) Logon to Host2 and run netstat - check how Host1 is presented in the foreign address column it may be in one of the following forms : Host1, Host1.com, 192.168.1.2
3) Make sure that in either /.rhosts or /ect/hosts.equiv on Host1 that the host name used is that as seen in the foreign addess column.
