Hi,

I am about to install Microsoft SMS server. I have briefly used sms 2.0 but only basic. I have downloaded the Microsoft Planning and deployment guide for 2003 and am reading through it. (i will be deploying 2003)

Can any one advise me of any tips, good approaches to use that may not be in the guide. For example how can i telll what effect sms has had on the network. What software shall i use, if network monitor what do i look for?
Do you take base line before installing, after, then after site wide software agent? Are there certain speeds, packet sizes i need to look for, are there any common mistakes that are made the first time you install the software. Are there any way to improve performance for say people attached to a particular switch et etc.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Regards

Download the SMS Toolkit 2. It has a tool that allows you to test whether a server is configured correctly to run the Management Point Components. Unfortunately, they do not have a tool to check all the other components yet.

Check They have a lot of good scripts, already made reports and queries that will be of help to you, especially scripts troubleshooting client connectivity.

Make sure that IIS and MSDTC is installed and enabled in your SMS server.

Most of the problems that you may encounter will be due to WMI and DCom permissions problems. Make Sure that under you Main SMS Server Computer Management\Services\WMI Control\Security\Root\SMS security properties, your Local SMS Admin Group has full rights to that folder and subfolders.

Check this:
Hope this helps,

Thanks Guys, Its people like you that make the internet worth while. The software won't be delivered until the end of the month so it gives me plenty of time to look into the stuff you have recommended.

Thanks again, i really appreciate it.
