Setting up Server 2k

Hello all, Here is where i am, i have a pc with server 2k installed, what i want is to set up a domain and have my other pcs in the house on the same domain, i want everyone in the house to log on with roaming profiles and have a drive mapped to a folder on the server. I know how to set up the users drives, what i am finding difficult is joing the other pcs to the domain, i have set given the domain a name on the server but when i try to join the xp machine i get the error that no domain controller can be found. I wonder if anyone has any tips or links to sites where i can find a step by step guide to setting this part up??

Have you actually configured the server to be a domain controller (its not by default).

Also, I ask is this a wise move in a house. If you make everything domain based, the server basically has to be on all the time. And what advantages do you get. Roaming profiles - the profile just gets bigger and takes longer to load. Much easier to stay with workgroup - you can still use a common area on the server to map to (if you want) - but again - what's the benefit? Modern PCs have all the resources they need to store/run stuff themselves - setting up a domain just complicates matters. Unless you're just doing it as an exercise - but if other people actually seriously use said machines, then I think you're on a loser.

Is the server setup with DHCP and DNS running?
Quite a few issues with joining a domain end up being a DNS issue.

Hi, Thanks for your replies, To be honest i have only set up the server as a domain and enabled DNS, the sever is the domain controller but i have still to go through the DHCP steps as i need to change my router/switch and wiring set up. I have not tried to ping it yet but will do tonight!


I think it may be because of the server being on a router that has been adapted to become a wireless extender, will change this week. The reason for setting up the domain at home is just to fiddle and play with it, one of my roles within the company i work for is to monitor the servers and report issues to the IT manager who is based off site, so this will help me better understand how the set up works.
